Enamoured

Artists Marco Bertuzzo and Andrew Testa collaborate in attempts to capture the feelings of truly getting to know a person. It is a rare moment, in society, when you can experience a person fully unguarded and exposed. This moment, is filled with raw human intimacy and openness and when experiencing such a relationship, it can even be frightening. These feelings embody the core of the portrait photographs we have created. Through vulnerable posing and dim, almost secretive lighting, we sought to peer past mere representation and recognition and create a moment of unguarded reflection and understanding between the artist and the image. These intimate glowing images provoke a haunting quality and allude to a certain sense of danger within such vulnerable experiences. The images depict clothed figures, laying on a bed, their eyes peering into those of the viewer. With no words and only a gaze, the subject sends an invitation to the viewer, and the viewer has the choice to respond or decline. ! We chose to illuminate works through light boxes to add a warm enticing glow that reminds the viewer of the glow and warmth of human flesh. This addition also elevates the work above a simple photograph to an image with much more depth and emotional significance. The small nature of the piece connotes a private photograph in an album rather than a large piece of work hanging in a gallery. Through a dimly lit space, these glowing images will draw the viewer in to investigate each portrait on an intimate level, by enabling only one or two viewers to truly appreciate the piece at a time, enforcing the private that we sought to instigate. The word “Enamour”, the title of this series means to be filled with a feeling of admiration and love, the precise emotion we hope to instil within the viewers of the work.
